| M16 SELF-PROPELLED LIGHT ANTI-AIRCRAFT GUN US ARM DESIGNATION:.50 cal Multiple Gun Motor Gun Carriage M16. TYPE: Self-propelled half track light anti-aircraft gun. PROGRAM: The M16 was designed as a self-propelled gun carriage that could provide armored columns with local defense from low-flying aircraft. Based on the M3 chassis and body, the M16 was the final half track model of the war. DESCRIPTION: The M16 featured an open rear compartment carrying one power-operated Maxson M45 turret with four (4) .50 cal Browning M2-HB machine guns. A separate gas-powered generator behind the turret charged two large 6-volt batteries, which provided power to the weapon. In an emergency, the truck's 12 volt battery could also briefly power the turret. Manual operation was also possible. |
The vehicle itself was based on the M3 half track. The body differed in that the top six inches of Armour could be folded down in order for the gun to traverse. Full 360 degree rotation was possible. Elevation +90 to -10 degrees. The crew was five, consisting of a commander, driver, gunner, and two
loaders. The gunner sat semi-reclined in the center of the mount,
with firing controls before him. Behind the generator, a large step
was provided upon which loaders could stand. The door on the rear of
the vehicle was removed to facilitate loading. Each gun could fire
600 rounds per minute. SPECIFICATIONS: 50 cal Multiple Gun Motor Gun Carriage M16 Dimensions Weight |
